Power off the printer and unplug it to avoid electric shock; wait 10 minutes for internal components to cool.

Next, access the print head: Open the printers top cover (most dot matrix printers have a latch or lever for this). Locate the print heada small, rectangular component with a row of tiny needles (visible when the ribbon is removed). Gently remove the ribbon cartridge by lifting its locking tabs; set it aside in a clean, dry place to avoid ink smudges.
