How Long Do Words on Thermal Paper Last?

The longevity of text on thermal paper varies significantly based on storage conditions and paper quality, typically ranging from a few months to several years.

Poor storage conditions drastically reduce lifespan. Exposure to direct sunlight or fluorescent light accelerates fading, as ultraviolet (UV) rays break down the heat-sensitive chemicals in the paper. High humidity (above 60%) causes the paper to absorb moisture, smudging the print and weakening the chemical bonds, leading to fading within 1–3 months. Heat (above 30°C), such as near radiators or in hot vehicles, can reactivate the thermal coating, causing the text to blur or disappear entirely in weeks.

Optimal conditions extend durability. Storing thermal prints in cool (15–25°C), dry (30–50% humidity) environments, away from light and air circulation, can preserve text for 2–5 years. Using high-quality thermal paper with protective coatings (e.g., UV inhibitors or moisture-resistant layers) further extends lifespan to 5–10 years in ideal storage. However, even under the best conditions, thermal prints are not permanent—over decades, gradual chemical degradation will still cause fading. For critical documents requiring long-term retention (e.g., medical records, invoices), copying or scanning thermal prints to non-thermal media is recommended.
